Wilmot Paye, the newly appointed Minister of Mines and Energy, and Hon. Williams S. Hines, Deputy Minister for Operations. The candid discussions focused on ways to improve Liberia's diamond industry. We are encouraged by their commitment to addressing the challenges and look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to drive meaningful change in the sector. * "Safe toilets for all by 2030” is a core targe * "Safe toilets for all by 2030” is a core target of Sustainable Development Goal 6, yet, according to recent UN data, 3.5 billion people still lack access to safely managed sanitation, with 419 million practicing open defecation. Diamonds for Peace has launched educational programs within small mining communities in Liberia, raising awareness on the health risks associated with poor hygiene. This year, thanks to generous support from Ikuo Shibuya, Tota Koyama (@totakoyama), @tokyopearl_official, and Japan Fund for Global Environment (@erca_kikin), we’ve renovated toilet facilities at the only school in Weasua. The site for agroforestry was an abandoned diamond mine. About its 70% is reclaimed and the rest of the site has been left overgrown with grass. In the photo, the cooperative members are cutting the grass to prepare for the agroforestry field. Projections indicate monthly temperatures could rise by 3.2°C by the 2080s, potentially exceeding a 4.8°C increase by century’s end. Liberia faces heightened vulnerability due to high poverty levels and its reliance on climate-sensitive sectors like mining.
