* 🌍 Big News from Camp Alpha, Liberia We are p * 🌍 Big News from Camp Alpha, Liberia We are proud to share that the mining cooperative PAMCOS—supported by Diamonds for Peace—has officially achieved full-fledged cooperative status! This milestone represents years of hard work and community collaboration. PAMCOS has received ongoing technical support from Diamonds for Peace in areas including rough diamond grading, responsible mining practices, beekeeping, record-keeping, and business plan development. Next, PAMCOS will expand its agroforestry initiative. Members will receive hands-on training in cultivating cashew trees and vegetables, along with the opportunity to learn cocoa fermentation techniques—an important addition given the number of members already engaged in cocoa farming. This is a significant step forward in empowering artisanal miners to formalize their work and improve their livelihoods through collective action. * Sweet progress 🍯🌳 Protecting forests—es * Sweet progress 🍯🌳 Protecting forests—especially flowering trees—is essential for healthy bee populations and stronger honey harvests. Between January and March 2025, miners in Weasua harvested 24 gallons of honey, a testament to the connection between environmental stewardship and sustainable livelihoods. In March, a cooperative member from Gbarma, a new mining community supported by Diamonds for Peace, also harvested half a gallon of honey—a promising start. We recognize the vital role bees play in our ecosystem and the importance of fostering environments where they thrive. * From Seed to Sapling: Victoria’s Vision 🍊🌱 Meet Victoria, one of the many inspiring community members leading change in Weasua. She has established her own nursery, where she’s carefully growing orange seedlings with plans to transplant them onto a reclaimed diamond mine site. Victoria’s initiative shows how local leadership and sustainable land use can go hand-in-hand. Each seedling is a step toward transforming a a reclamation site into a source of nourishment, shade, and income. * Nurturing the land, growing the future 🌱🍌 * Nurturing the land, growing the future 🌱🍌 Musa is a dedicated member of our agroforestry program in Weasua. Every day, Musa waters the trees and vegetable crops at the agroforestry demonstration site—a vital part of restoring land previously impacted by mining. He has planted plantains (a starchy, tropical fruit in the banana family) on his own initiative. * What does hope look like on a reclaimed diamond * What does hope look like on a reclaimed diamond mine? For the community in Weasua, Liberia—it looks like rows of orange trees. From April 2024 to February 2025, Diamonds for Peace conducted a Farmer Field School to introduce agroforestry techniques that help restore the land. Participants learned how to cultivate orange trees on a former mining site—transforming what was once depleted soil into fertile ground to give back to the community. * The Gola National Forest in northwestern Liberia * The Gola National Forest in northwestern Liberia is one of the region’s largest remaining areas of dense evergreen and semi-deciduous forest. Through a collaborative effort between the Liberian government and the Rainforest Alliance (@rainforestalliance), it has been upgraded from a National Forest to a National Park (GNP), enhancing protections for its rich biodiversity. However, while safeguarding wildlife, this designation has also impacted local livelihoods, as small-scale miners can no longer operate in the area. Many members of the Pampaya Mining Cooperative Society (PAMCOS) lost their mines within the newly protected GNP. * Despite being one of the world’s wettest count * Despite being one of the world’s wettest countries, Liberia lacks the infrastructure to provide safe drinking water to all. According to @wateraid, 1.3 million people - about a quarter of the population - do not have clean water close to home. As a result, nearly 500 children under five lose their lives each year due to waterborne diseases linked to poor sanitation. At Diamonds for Peace, we are working alongside mining communities in Weasua to provide education on sanitation and optimal usage of this precious resource, particularly with the installation of portable clean water taps. During the Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks, we donated portable water taps to promote handwashing and help prevent the spread of disease. * 【💎DFPと水問題💎】 リベリアは世界で最も雨の多い国のひとつですが、安全な飲料水を提供するインフラが不足しています。ウォーターエイド (@wateraid) によると、人口の約4分の1に当たる130万人が清潔な水を身近に確保できていません。その結果、毎年500人近くの5歳未満の子どもたちが、劣悪な衛生環境に起因する水関連の疾患によって命を落としています。 DFPでは、ウィズアの採掘村と協力し、衛生教育、また、ウィズアの貴重な資源の最適な利用法、特に手洗い用バケツの設置に取り組んでいます。エボラ出血熱とCOVID-19の流行時には、手洗いを促進し、病気の蔓延を防ぐために手洗い用バケツを寄贈しました。 #DiamondsforPeace #Liberia #WorldWaterDay #Hygiene #世界水の日 #公衆衛生

* Seventeen-year-old Deborah, a 10th-grade student * Seventeen-year-old Deborah, a 10th-grade student from Weasua Town, took part in Diamonds for Peace’s trash management workshop in 2023. Inspired by what she learned, she began implementing waste management practices at home and school, encouraging her family and friends to do the same. She even set up a trash can in her home to collect waste for proper disposal at an approved site. Despite initial resistance from some in her community, Deborah remains committed: « I will not give up.
